Engineers have discovered an innovative way to enhance concrete strength and reduce cracking by incorporating scrap carpet fibres.<a href="#_ftn1">[1]</a> This exciting development not only improves the durability of concrete but also promotes product circularity in the construction industry. The research team, collaborating with partners like Textile Recyclers Australia and Godfrey Hirst, is testing concrete made from recycled textiles.&nbsp;Dr. Chamila Gunasekara, a lead researcher from RMIT University, explained that their technique can reduce cracking in concrete by up to&nbsp;30%, improving its durability. Beju Residences epitomises the feeling of wellness and tranquility through the carefully articulated architecture. This is not only through the location, but through the selection of refined pallete wallpapers, furnishings, and particularly the floorcoverings.&nbsp;

The Feltex carpet that was meticulously selected for this project was chosen with style and durability in mind. For Beju Residences, Elicia chose Salisbury in colour 11 Druid Stone, providing a neutral foundation for the tonal palette throughout the homes. Our Salisbury wool range offers a range of neutral colours in a textured loop pile, which creates a unique pattern throughout the room.

Earth Day 2024

On the 15th of March 2024, Feltex held our largest Take 3 for the Sea clean-up event to date, but this time in our Head Office’s backyard alongside the Barwon River with our biggest team yet! We are proud to be an official supporter of the Take 3 for the Sea organisation for the fourth year in a row. 
In just an hour, our team of 40 people, along with Take 3 for the Sea representatives, collected 1,488 litter items weighing an astounding 34.5kg altogether! Take 3 for the Sea is an important organisation that works to remove litter from our environment which helps to protect our animals, ecosystems, and waterways.

The Feltex team joined forces with Take 3 for the Sea along the Barwon River in South Geelong for a riverside clean-up event. A total of 34.5kg was collected by the Feltex team, totalling 1488 items in one hour, the litter filled 5 garbage bags!&nbsp;

Together, we crafted a series of distinctive, branded designs tailored to each venue's specific requirements.

Festival has added an extra layer of excitement to the country's biggest comedy festival. Located at Trades Hall in the heart of Melbourne, this ever-so-creative retreat serves as a perfect prelude to the laughter and joy that the festival promises.

As guests mingle and interact within the lounge, they find themselves surrounded by Leech's signature style—bold colours, eclectic furnishings, and an unapologetic sense of playfulness expressed through our designer carpet brand, Feltex. The space becomes a reflection of the festival itself—a celebration of individuality, creativity, and the joy of laughter.&nbsp;

For those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the festival, the lounge offers a welcome retreat. Plush seating and cozy nooks provide the perfect spot to unwind with a drink in hand, while the vibrant decor serves as a feast for the eyes.&nbsp;

We spoke to Bree to discuss the process that created such an amazing lounge space.&nbsp;

For Bree, Feltex’s maximalist theme is all about pushing the boundaries of colour, texture and pattern - bringing together unexpected combinations and surprises through the overall design concept and details.

In the vibrant tapestry of the Feltex lounge space, there's a seamless integration of artistry and collaboration, embodied through the work of the talented artist, Renee Melia. Renowned for her captivating prints and bold aesthetic, Melia's contribution adds an extra layer of depth and intrigue to Bree’s eclectic design.&nbsp;

Drawing inspiration from Lorena’s personal lucky number 8, this designer Feltex collection transforms ordinary carpets into playful works of art, bringing a sense of optimism and infusing a sense of good fortune. The Fortuna collection symbolises a celebration of design in a perfect way to start the year with positive energy and creativity. The Festival kicks off on the 24th of February, promising over one hundred fashion events at 60 distinct venues across Melbourne. Lorena Gaxiola + Gallies have partnered with the Feltex design team to bring an entirely new concept of floor coverings and fashion-inspired carpet designs to life at the 2024 PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival. Drawing from a diverse range of creative disciplines, this carpet is set to add vibrancy and life to the luxurious Fashion Forecourt VIP Bar.

The PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival will again this year utilise our GH Commercial divisions' <a href="https://www.ghcommercial.com/designer-jet">Designer Jet®</a> custom carpet technology to create a one-of-a-kind atmosphere, where every detail, from the flooring to the colour palette, aligns seamlessly. The implementation of custom carpets helps to create unique elements across the event to elevate the experience of those in attendance and ensure for a seamless fusion of luxury, innovation and the vibrant essence of the PayPal Melbourne Fashion Festival

This year, we are delighted to extend our support to the Festival by offering an array of bespoke flooring solutions for various key areas, including the premium runway, media wall, Fashion Forecourt VIP Bar, and we’ve also been lucky enough to create a one of a kind carpet for the premium runway series including "Emerging MOB in Fashion Runway x Fujitsu” featuring First Nation designers that are at the forefront of the industry and the “Urban Oasis x Fujitsu” runways. One carbon offsetting project we have supported is the Yunnan Yuanjiang Lutong Hydropower Station is located in Yunnan Province, China2. A factor in our decision to support this project was the fact that several of our hard flooring suppliers are located in China. The project is a diversion-type run-of-river hydropower station with an installed capacity of 10MW generating approximately 52,920MWh of electricity annually. &nbsp;The project reduces the emission of greenhouse gases by replacing equivalent electricity from the China Southern Power Grid, which is dominated by fossil fuel-fired power plants.

Utilising water resources of the Du River and delivering an annual average of 1,105,800 MWh of electricity to the Central China Power Grid, this project upholds the UN Sustainability Development Goal of taking urgent climate action. Local electricity demand was previously supplied by the Hubei Grid, comprised predominantly of non-renewable coal power plants. This hydropower plant has a total installed capacity of 500MW and reduces the emission of greenhouse gases by replacing traditional thermal power with renewable hydropower.

One carbon offsetting project that we have supported is the ‘Carbon Conscious Carbon Capture Project 1’ which is a reforestation project across 14 properties totalling 5,700ha in the Central and Northern Agricultural Regions of Western Australia3. &nbsp;We chose this project as a reflection of our Australian Made operations, with all of our soft floor coverings made in Australia and New Zealand. From 2009 to 2010 over 6 million native species Mallee trees planted on land previously cleared for dryland cropping and grazing. Registration as a Carbon Farming Initiative Project included commitment to maintaining the forest for a minimum of 100 years. This region in Western Australia was recognised as significantly over-cleared, and the reforestation is: providing protective habitat for native flora and fauna; reducing wind and water erosion; in some cases reducing soil salinity and some cases providing a useful environment for sheep and honey bees.

The Grand Designs Australia Magazine House of the Year Awards (HOTY) proudly puts the spotlight on residential architecture, showcasing some of the best projects created by Australian Architects. The HOTY Awards are designed to celebrate the brilliant outcomes created by Architects for their clients, resulting in an incredibly high standard of project submissions.&nbsp;

The Grand Designs Australia Magazine HOTY Awards is now CLOSED for nominations! The team at Grand Designs were calling on Australian architects to enter their best residential projects to win this prestigious award and huge exposure through Grand Designs Australia Magazine and associated social media channels. The awards will be judged by a panel of architect professionals and are presented in April each year.&nbsp;

Within the Awards program, there are 8 categories including Large New Home, Small New Home, Large Renovation, Small Renovation and the speciality categories of Best Interior Award (presented by Cosh Living), Best Energy Efficient Home Award (presented by Rylock Windows &amp; Doors) and Best Outdoor Integrated Living in addition there is also the People’s Choice Awards which allows readers and architecture enthusiasts to vote for their favourite project!&nbsp;

HOTY Awards celebrate the brilliant the best projects created by Australian Architects.

Grand Designs Australia Magazine: 2024 House Of The Year Awards

At Feltex, efforts to advance our shared mission of a more sustainable future continue. Having already fitted 436 solar panels on our warehouses in Truganina and Laverton, we’ve now completed our largest ever installation.&nbsp;

Plant 5, our North Geelong carpet tufting facility, is now the proud owner of a 500kW solar system. Covering 12,000m2 of the facility’s roof, the 1,088 460W panels generate up to 1.97MWh of clean energy per day, offsetting over 60% of daytime electricity. &nbsp;This will help to power the production of over 16,000 lineal metres of carpet each day and reduce electricity bills at the Plant by an average of 28%.

To deliver this transformation, we used Tier 1 JA Solar 460W monocrystalline solar panels on the north facing side of the Plant, together with SolarEdge three phase inverters and optimisers. Recognised amongst the best bankable solar technology globally, the optimisers increase system production by tracking the maximum power of each panel.

The smart meter technology from SolarEdge also provides load monitoring, so we can see how much solar power is being consumed on site and exported. Plus, real-time monitoring of individual panels, making it easy to find and diagnose any faults.

A Brighter Side To Carpet Manufacturing

On the 17th of March 2023 Feltex held our largest Take 3 for the Sea beach clean-up event to date! This now being our third beach clean-up event in as many years, as well as continuing to be an official supporter of Take 3 for the Sea, we are proud to get behind such an important organisation.&nbsp;

In only one hour, our 31-person strong team along with Take 3 for the Sea representatives collected 1,657 litter items weighing 7kg altogether. Working to remove this litter from our environment helps to protect our animals, ecosystems, and oceans.

Eastern Beach is a popular waterfront area with high traffic, especially on a beautiful sunny afternoon, like we had! The team were in good spirits as they set out to clean up the beach, and showed great dedication to the task, collecting waste from areas that clearly hadn't been cleaned in a while. They also did a great job of accurately recording their findings, providing detailed data collection sheets to help identify waste sources. As an Australian and New Zealand manufacturer, we actively work towards reducing our environmental footprint across our infrastructure and facilities. We strive to improve processes and seek to source and develop local solutions to this global issue under our sustainability vision, Believe in Better.

Large factory and warehouse facilities generally require a sizeable system for lighting. These systems can result in a significant energy drain so, with that in mind, we upgraded our lighting systems to energy-efficient LED lights.

Between late 2021 and early 2023, we have replaced approximately 75% of the lights at our Plant 5 and Melbourne Logistics sites and our South Geelong and Breakwater sites with higher-efficiency LED models. This was achieved through the LED Light Replacement/Upgrade under the Victorian Energy Upgrades rebate program.

The light fittings replaced included high-bay units in production and warehousing areas, as well as 4-foot battens, some oyster-style lights in bathrooms and small offices, and some panel-style fittings in office areas. Exit lights were also replaced at Plant 5 with an LED version.

The new fittings include programable features such as motion sensors, light level sensors and automatic timer-off functions to allow us to configure the operation of the light fittings to suit the environment and application – maximising energy savings.

With the introduction of a new dye washing line which has dramatically reduced our energy consumption and water consumption within this process which will save 500 Litres per minute of water during a production run. This new initiative is just one of the ways that we are becoming more sustainable for our planet and reducing our environmental footprint.

Latex Application 
Latex application during our manufacturing process utilises water to adhere a secondary backing to the carpet. We have recently introduced a new initiative that recycles the water utilised in our latex application process which is done weekly in large batches. This new initiative has resulted in significant water consumption savings with 600L less water being used every 14-tonne latex batch.

Sims Metal regularly collect metal scraps and old unused machinery from our manufacturing operations. With 36,900 kilograms of metal collected by Sims Metal from Feltex premises in 2022. All metal is then processed or broken down in order to be repurposed. All of the metal collected from our sites here in Geelong is reused and repurposed within Australia.

Colour impacts the mood, feeling and personality of a room. Colour can help enhance the appearance of a room’s size, allowing you to make the most of natural and artificial light.&nbsp;

No matter how big or small the area, the colour of the floor will have a major impact on the feeling of space within the room. If the area is small or lacks natural light, a lighter shade of carpet will make it appear larger and brighter.

Wool carpet is a very practical option in terms of cleaning and maintenance. It is naturally resistant to dirt and household stains.

<h3>Hypoallergenic</h3>

Wool carpet is ideal for allergy and asthma suffers as it does not promote the growth of bacteria, mould and mildew.&nbsp; This reduces the likelihood of spores, mycotoxins and volatile organic compounds from developing in the home, helping to prevent allergies and respiratory problems. Wool fibre also deters the growth of dust mites – the most common cause of asthma.

Effortlessly beautiful, wool carpet also has many naturally occurring benefits.

Carpet usually does not wear out in terms of fibre wearing away, rather its appearance can deteriorate over time to a point at which it is no longer acceptable.

<h3>The Carpet Care Program</h3>

A comprehensive carpet care program consists of four elements:

<ul>
	<li>Preventative measures</li>
	<li>Regular vacuuming</li>
	<li>Steam cleaning</li>
	<li>Removal of spots and spill</li>
</ul>

<h3>Preventative Measures</h3>

<ul>
	<li>Use new, quality underlay under your carpet, particularly on stairs. Good underlay gives better resilience underfoot and can also add to the life of your carpet. Installing carpet over carpet (i.e. using old carpet as underlay) is not recommended.</li>
	<li>Try to keep your entrance ways free of excessive dirt and substances which can be tracked into the home. Outdoor mats should be used at all entrances to absorb soil and moisture. Mats should be cleaned on a regular basis so they don’t become sources of soil themselves, especially during wet weather.</li>
	<li>Protective indoor mats or rugs are very useful in front of chairs, as the continual grinding of footwear can accelerate wear in these areas. This wear is usually most prevalent in front of chairs used for TV viewing, computer use and under tables.</li>
	<li>Move heavy furniture occasionally to avoid excessive pile crushing. The use of coasters under the legs of tables, chairs and other furniture will help distribute the weight and prevent crushing of the pile. Use protective chair pads under chairs or appliances with rollers or castor wheels to prevent wear and damage to the carpet. When moving heavy wheeled furniture (pianos, buffets, etc), prevent damage by placing a protective barrier of heavy cardboard or similar between the wheels and the carpet.</li>
	<li>Be sure to regularly remove and clean any rugs used over your carpet. Clean and restore the pile of the carpet in the underlying area. Check rugs for colourfastness before replacement, as the dyes in some rugs may bleed through to the carpet. After cleaning your carpet, remember to allow complete drying before replacing rugs.</li>
	<li>Protect your carpet and furnishings from prolonged periods of sunlight with window tinting, blinds, shades and/or awnings to minimise fading and maintain durability. Move furniture periodically to expose all areas evenly.</li>
</ul>

<h3>Moths / Carpet Beetles and Wool Carpets</h3>

All Feltex wool carpets have insect resistant treatments applied during manufacture. The treatment does not stop insects from entering your home and moths / beetles can build up an immunity and in some areas, have developed a tolerance to treatments. The insect deterrent treatment is embedded in the carpet fibre and needs to be ingested by the insect to have an effect and stop further spreading – such that some fibre loss may occur and good housekeeping is essential.

Regular vacuuming along the skirting, under furniture and in corners will discourage insects and reveal any infestations at an early stage. If you believe there may be a minor infestation thoroughly vacuum the area (spraying the contents of the vacuum cleaner with insecticide prior to disposal) and treat the infested area, extending 15 cm beyond the boundaries of the activity, with an insecticidal aerosol spray or dust following manufacturer’s directions and precautions.

In the case of serious infestations or if the initial treatment is not successful, it is recommended you contact a professional pest control operator.

<h3>Regular Vacuuming</h3>

Thorough and frequent vacuuming, particularly in high traffic areas, is important for prolonging the life of your carpet and assisting to enhance its appearance.

After your carpet is laid, vacuum to remove surface lint, dust and fluff. Thereafter, continue to vacuum thoroughly at least weekly and more frequently in high traffic areas. This will remove soil and grit before it works its way below the pile surface, where it is far more difficult to remove and can abrade the carpet and dull its appearance.

Three vacuum passes for light soiled areas are recommended, with five to seven passes for heavily soiled areas. Vacuuming against the natural pile direction first lifts the pile, helping to unsettle and remove dirt and grit while reducing matting. Then, vacuum in the direction of the pile to achieve a uniform finish.

To effectively clean your carpet, use only a quality vacuum cleaner. Vacuums fitted with micro filter systems ensure fine particles (such as dust mite allergens) are removed and stay in the collection bag or canister. This is particularly important if you are dust sensitive. Consider your carpet type when selecting a vacuum. Adjustable height and suction are important features as they enable your vacuum to be used on a wide variety of carpet constructions. Luxuriously thick, soft cut pile carpets: Use a high height setting so any beater bar/rotating brush just lightly touches the carpet surface. Use a suction level that allows the vacuum to move easily whilst lifting dirt and other foreign matter.

Avoid vacuums with very concentrated or sealed suctions. Large wheels will ensure the vacuum glides easily across the carpet.

Loop pile or long pile carpets (including cut loop and berber): Vacuum with suction only. Vacuum powerheads, beater bars and rotating brushes should never be used as they may cause excessive fuzzing of the pile surface.

Other carpet constructions: Use a vacuum with a beater bar to agitate the pile and loosen any foreign matter in the pile.

Change or empty dust collection bags frequently (vacuum cleaner efficiency can be reduced when half full). Ensure the vacuum is kept in sound mechanical condition. Replace filters as recommended by the manufacturer. Check the height of beaters (if fitted) and ensure brushes are cleaned and replaced when worn out.

<h3>Steam Cleaning</h3>

Carpet should be professionally steam cleaned regularly, approximately every twelve to eighteen months, depending upon the usage and colour. Even though both light and dark colours attract the same dirt and grit, lighter colours tend to show soiling earlier.

Steam cleaning should only be performed by a reputable professional steam cleaner. Your carpet retailer can recommend one.

Steam cleaning when carried out should be in accordance with the latest Australian/New Zealand carpet cleaning and maintenance standard AS/NZS 3733 “Textile floor coverings.

- Cleaning maintenance of residential and commercial carpeting”. Reputable carpet cleaners are aware of and abide by this standard.

Shampooing, do-it-yourself steam cleaning or dry cleaning of carpets is not recommended.

<h3>Spot Cleaning Guide</h3>

Prompt and immediate attention to any spillages or stains is paramount to avoid the penetration of a stain into the carpet fibres. Liquids (particularly hot liquids) must be attended to immediately. If allowed to cool or dry, the stain will be almost impossible to remove. Care must be taken as haphazard attempts at spot removal can cause permanent stain setting, pile distortion and loss of colour.

Basic Carpet Cleaning Steps:

<ol>
	<li>Immediately remove as much of the spill as possible. For solids use a blunt knife or spoon. Blot up liquids by applying pressure with white paper towels or tissues. Use a wet/dry vacuum for large spills. NEVER scrub or rub the carpet during the stain removal (or rinsing) process as a fuzzy area may result. Always work from the outside of the stain or spillage towards the middle to avoid further spreading using a blotting or dabbing motion. Never scrub or rub the carpet during the stain removal (or rinsing) process as a fuzzy area may result.</li>
	<li>Most common household food and beverage stains (not including stains containing strong dyes or substances which destroy or change the colour of carpet) need to be treated solely with warm, not hot, water immediately applied to the stained area. Repeat treatment above until no stain is evident on the cloth or towels used to press dry the area.</li>
	<li>Ensure carpet is press dried with a clean white cloth or white paper towel to remove excess moisture. Do not rub, as rubbing can alter the carpet’s texture.</li>
	<li>Should the stain remain, using a clean white cloth or sponge, treat with a mixture of 1 teaspoon of approved wool laundry detergent and one teaspoon of white vinegar in 1 litre of warm water. Rinse with warm water, repeating treatment until no stain is evident on cloth or towels.</li>
	<li>After the spill or stain has been treated, place several layers of white paper towel over the area and place a flat weight on them until dry. A hairdryer may be used to speed up the drying process but do NOT overheat the area. Do not walk on the carpet until dry.</li>
	<li>Sometimes stains will reappear due to ‘wicking’ as stains hidden in the pile resurface as the carpet dries. If so, allow the carpet to dry fully and repeat the above treatment until no stain is evident (this process may need to be repeated over several days).</li>
	<li>If stains fail to respond adequately to treatment, call a professional carpet cleaner immediately.</li>
</ol>

Stains should be differentiated from soiling. Ensure that any residue from spills or cleaning mixtures are fully removed. For example, many sugar based spills, such as soft drinks and coffee, leave a sugar residue after removal. Similarly, when spills are cleaned with a detergent solution and the area is not sufficiently rinsed, a sticky detergent residue can remain. This sticky residue attracts soil from ordinary foot traffic and the resulting discolouration appears to be a stain. If so, repeat stain removal procedures above.

All carpets should be laid in accordance with AS 2455.1:"Textile floor coverings - Installation practice - General" and the <a href="https://res.cloudinary.com/gh/image/upload/v1/articles/731c03e3-7b74-4869-9034-0c3f776b7d48/docs/installation-recommendations/instructions.pdf">Feltex Installation Recommendations</a>.&nbsp;

Insist on trained professional tradesmen to install your carpet. Before making any cut from a roll, ensure your installer examines the carpet and checks for length, quality, pattern, colour and dye lot.

To avoid bubbling and wrinkling, all carpets should be power stretched in both length and width during installation using a power stretcher with extendable poles (not knee kickers) where possible.&nbsp;

The quality of an installation depends on the quality of the seams. If the seams are not permanently bonded together, the carpet may unravel and begin to break down at the edges, making it appear badly fitted and causing premature wear. Seam adhesive (sealer) must be used for all seams (width wise and lengthwise). Use a solvent base seam seal adhesive on direct glue down applications or a latex base seam seal adhesive for conventional installations. Seams are not covered by the <a href="https://www.feltex.com/au/grouped-highlights/cpt-warranties">Feltex Wool Carpet Limited Residential Warranties</a>.

Carpet pile should run in the same direction throughout the house, sweeping towards the main entrance where possible. Seams and cross joins in the wrong place can spoil the appearance of your carpet and lead to premature wear. Generally, seams should run in the same direction as most foot traffic. Seams should also be avoided in high traffic areas and be kept as far away from windows as possible, so light does not fall across the seam making it more obvious. Ask the installer where they will place seams and cross joins.

Carpet pile should sweep down on stairways. A little hidden extra carpet should be folded back at the top and bottom of stairs so that as the edges of the tread are worn down, the carpet can be moved to hide the wear point. Purchasing extra carpet to update stairs is recommended. Failure to have your carpet installed using the above guidelines may adversely affect the performance of your carpet.

Carpet Installation

Quickly get&nbsp;to any spillages or stains, this decrease the opportunity that the&nbsp;stain&nbsp;will penetrate the carpet fibres. Liquids, especially hot liquids&nbsp;must be attended to straight away.

If allowed to cool or dry, the stain will be much harder to remove.

Carelessness during stain removal can result in the stain setting in and becoming permanent, pile distortion or loss of colour from the carpet.

1. Immediately remove as much of the spill as possible. For solids use a blunt knife or spoon. Blot up liquids by applying pressure with white paper towels or tissues. Use a wet / dry vacuum for large spills. NEVER scrub or rub the carpet during the stain removal (or rinsing) process as a fuzzy area may result. Always work from the outside of the stain or spillage towards the middle to avoid further spreading using a blotting or dabbing motion.

2. After the spill or stain has been treated, place several layers of white paper towels over the area and place a flat weight on them until dry. 
 
A hair dryer may be used to speed up the drying process but do NOT overheat the area. Do not walk on the carpet until dry.

3. Sometimes stains will reappear due to ‘wicking’ as stains hidden in the pile resurface as the carpet dries. If so, allow the carpet to dry fully and repeat the above treatment until no stain is evident (this process may need to be repeated over several days).

4. If stains fail to respond adequately to treatment, call a professional carpet cleaner immediately. 
 
It is important professional steam cleaners continually treat any areas affected by stains until there is no sign of discolouration in the carpet or removed water, following which the cleaning cycle should be repeated a number of times to minimise the risk of wicking.

Stains should be differentiated from soiling.

Ensure that any residue from spills or cleaning mixtures are fully removed. For example, many sugar based spills, such as soft drinks and coffee, leave a sugar residue after removal. 
 
Similarly, when spills are cleaned with a detergent solution and the area is not sufficiently rinsed, a sticky detergent residue can remain. This sticky residue attracts soil from ordinary foot traffic and the resulting discolouration appears to be a stain. If so, repeat stain removal procedures above.
