Wool carpet is a natural insulator, helping to keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer. Because of wool’s natural inbuilt crimp, air is retained in millions of tiny pockets which provide an insulating effect, thus creating a comfortable environment.

The unique properties of wool react to changes in temperature, absorbing and desorbing significant quantities of moisture from the air to control humidity. In cold, damp conditions (high relative humidity) moisture is absorbed by wool and heat is given off. In warm dry conditions, moisture is released by wool, resulting in a cooling effect.

Thermal Insulation and Humidity Control

Wool absorbs moisture in the air and controls humidity for a comfortable environment, making it cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

 The International Living Future Institute (ILFI), and local affiliate the Living Future Institute of Australia (LFIA), are organisations committed to driving sustainable change in the Australian Built environment through the development of leading edge programs, that are designed to radically change our approach to building and construction.


 Predicated on creating a healthier built environment, the Declare® program delivers clear, unambiguous information about building material specifications. Participating manufacturers are required to disclose a Product’s entire constituent chemical composition to a threshold of 100-parts-per-million; essentially creating a ‘nutrition’ label of ingredients.

 Each Declare® label is compared against a list of worst-inclass materials, better known as the Red List. Chemicals on the Red List can pose an increased risk of:

All our wool carpets have insect resistant treatments applied during manufacture. 

The treatment does not stop insects from entering your home and moths/ beetles can build up an immunity and in some areas have developed a tolerance to treatments. The insect deterrent treatment is embedded in the carpet fibre and needs to be ingested by the insect to have an effect and stop further spreading – such that some fibre loss may occur and good housekeeping is essential.

Naturally Insulating 
Wool absorbs moisture in the air and controls humidity for a comfortable environment, making it cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Wool carpet can also absorb and desorb significant quantities of moisture from the air to buffer humidity changes in a room.

Fire Resistance 
Wool carpet has natural flame resistant properties due to its ability to char when burnt and not melt like synthetic fibres. It retains heat and starves its surface of air, extinguishing flames.

Stain Resistance 
The wool fibres natural structure consists of overlapping scales, arranged much like roof shingles. These scales inhibit dirt from adhering to the fibre and help fleck it away.
NOTE: eventually the wool will naturally absorb stains so cleaning is best done immediately.

Biodegradable 
As a natural resource, wool fibre is biodegradable. When wool fibre is disposed of, it will naturally decompose in soil in a matter of months or years, slowly releasing valuable nutrients back into the earth.

Renewable 
A renewable material, wool is shorn from sheep every 9-12 months and produced by sheep consuming a totally renewable resource - grass.

Fractals are the building blocks of many of nature’s patterns and have been scientifically proven to reduce stress and so provide benefits to physical health. This visual language is the basis for Relaxing Floors, a modular system designed by 13&9 in collaboration with Fractals Research and Mohawk Group. Relaxing Floors is the culmination of art, science and human-centered design based on fractal patterns. For generations, Indigenous people have shared culture through stories and artwork. At Dreamtime Flooring, Indigenous heritage is drawn from to celebrate this rich culture through the flooring medium in the hopes of preserving those stories for our future generations. 

Dreamtime's mission is to have as many buildings as possible for current and future generations to see Aboriginal ancestry and culture with a particular focus on public buildings: Government, council, schools, libraries and galleries. Meet Lichen Community, designed in collaboration with McLennan Design, a modular carpet collection that connects us to a more restorative future. Inspired by expansive communities of lichens that grow together on bark and rock formations, playing a role in our ecosystems, the Lichen Community collection has been designed to provide a refined solution for creating collaborative environments, bringing people together. Rooted in the concept of symbiosis, Lichen Community defines communal spaces through colour and texture. This fresh take on the original Lichen collection offers an additional bark texture to join the popular stone base, serving as ground textures for the multi-hued lichens that grow together in place.


<h2>Biophilic design, locally made</h2>
Biophilic design aims to enhance humankind’s innate biological connection with nature, bringing natural elements into interior spaces and mimicking natural patterns. This new collection concentrates on mimicking the growth patterns of real lichens on stone and tree bark, incorporating colours that takes us on a visual journey through the forest, from the floor into the trees with the new warm, bark-grey background and soft, more muted highlights. This collection is a result of a collaboration with ArtLifting, using the work of artist Charlie French as a point of departure.
