When looking for carpet for your home, entering the carpet retail space can be a little overwhelming. Technical terms like "broadloom" and "anti microbial" can make it slightly daunting.

Here is a glossary of Carpet Terms to assist you when selecting your Feltex Carpet:

Tufted carpet
Tufted carpets are made on machines where the yarn is stitched through a cloth (primary backing). The tufted cloth then has latex (an adhesive) applied to the primary backing and a secondary backing fabric is then attached to stabilise the carpet and give it the final form.

Backing is the hessian or synthetic material laminated to the back of the carpet during the manufacturing process to reinforce it and increase stability.

A thin layer of cushioned material laid between the floor and the carpet to provide extra cushioning underfoot as well as sound and heat insulation.

Broadloom is carpet manufactured in 3.66 metre widths (the pre-metric 12’ width) to minimise joins.

Square Metres
A square metre is the area of a square where each side measures exactly 1 metre.

Lineal Metres
A lineal metre is a standard carpet length – 3.66 metres wide x 1 metre long.

The pile is the upright ends of cut or loop yarn that form the surface of the carpet.

Pile Height
Pile Height is the height from the primary backing of the carpet to the upright end of the yarn.

Anti Static
Anti static is carpet that is specially treated to reduce static electricity.

Solution Dyed
Solution dyed means that colour is applied to the yarn before it is made into carpet.

Fade Resistance
Fade Resistance is the ability of the carpet to maintain its colour when exposed to sunlight.

Australian Carpet Classification Scheme (ACCS) is an independent testing and grading scheme for carpet. This was established by the Carpet Institute of Australia.

Woven Carpets

Woven is the traditional method of marking carpet on a loom. Each piece of coloured yarn is individually woven into place, so woven carpets are capable of producing intricate patterns. The carpet pile and backing materials are woven together in a single operation. This unique construction process provides Axminster carpets with excellent durability and appearance retention.
