Dubbed by the Canberra Times as the 'Guggenheim-styled Vibe Hotel' it is certainly a luxurious sight to behold. Designed by architectural firm, Bates Smart, the $50 million seven-storey, 191-room hotel was shortlisted for the IDEA Awards 2016, Australia's largest and most successful independent design awards, to be announced Friday, 18 November.
Luke Saunder of the TFE Group, which partnered with Canberra Airport in the development, said designers, Bates Smart, had referenced the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Guggenheim Museum in New York with the seven-storey-high atrium.
The building's standout design feature, the atrium, is pierced by large skylights and soars over the lobby, bar, restaurant and other public areas.
A custom Feltex Woven Axminster was designed and supplied to guestrooms throughout the hotel, while beautiful handcrafted rugs were produced for the lobby. The custom woven carpets complement the hotel's circular and axial geometries and highlight the expertise in custom manufacturing.
The deep and dark opulent colour palette references the grandeur of this stunning hotel, along with subtle gold highlights and the incredible black and white atruim.
