Strolling The Corridors Of History at Kurrajong Hotel
Walking through the double brass framed entry doors of Canberra’s heritage listed Hotel Kurrajong, it’s easy to imagine yourself in a more elegant and gracious era. First opened in 1926 at the birth of the nations capital, this historic hotel not only played host to Canberra’s first parliamentarians, but housed the Prime Minister, Ben Chifley, throughout his entire parliamentary career, up until his death in 1951.
Like all Grand Dames the years took their toll and Hotel Kurrajong, in a joint venture between the National Roads & Motorists’ Association (NRMA) and TFE Hotels, underwent a complete restoration and refurbishment. Seamlessly capturing the stunning Art Deco era with its nostalgic ambient lighting, jazz music and artworks, visitors can wander corridors alive in Australian political history.
The Custom Carpet
Working with the award winning interior designers at SJB Architects, the Feltex in-house design team created the ideal hotel carpet for each of the Hotel Kurrajong’s guest rooms and public areas, along with supplying stunning custom hand-crafted rugs for the main corridors. Inspired by the precise lines, geometric shapes and jewelled colours distinctive to Art Deco stylings, the end result was a perfect homage to the era.
Made from a rich blend of premium wools, and employing traditional weaving skills with state of the art technology, the woven Axminster carpet is a bold base for the entire commercial interior. Feltex produced a custom carpet that combined the resilience required for the heavy traffic areas of a hospitality carpet, with the luxuriant underfoot feel expected in a quality hotel.
Hotel Kurrajong has successfully merged the glamour of a bygone era with the very best of contemporary comfort and innovation.
